SSotW: Photo Ops' "I'd Be Dead"

Written by

Terry PriceEvery artist does what they love for a specific reason. Some feel passionate about spreading a particular message, others love the spotlight, but Terry Price, AKA Photo Ops, has a uniquely fascinating dedication to his craft.

Terry Price's father battled symptoms of manic depression and schizophrenia throughout his life, eventually being diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder before passing away in 2011 from a heart attack. As if that weren't enough of an excruciatingly traumatic circumstance, Price awoke one morning completely paralyzed on one side of his face. He was diagnosed with Bell's palsy, but eventually recovered facial movement. Price then found inspiration from his hardships to release his 2013 debut album How To Say Goodbye.

Terry Price performs now as a solo artist under the name "Photo Ops" in honor of his father who travelled across the U.S. in the 70s taking picturs of moments throughout his journey. Photo Ops' music is characterized by honest lyrics and timeless melodies, and is incredibly relatable. Price makes music not only for himself, but for his friends, family, and listeners who are going through similar heartbreaks and letdowns. In describing his connection with a specific audience, Price promises "I'm going to be honest and say things in a way that connect with as many people as possible — without sacrificing artistic integrity".

We have been loving Photo Ops' new song, "I'd Be Dead", which is to appear on his sophomore album Vacation. While the artist now performs solo, this is a sweet song of gratitude for those that have helped him along the way -- embracing the fact that his journey has been anything but solo. It is his way of saying "thank-you" for the help he has received along the way. The simple and meaningful phrase rings out as the song opens: "I'd be dead if I didn't have you".

Instrumental accompaniment takes a back seat as Price sings about his father's illness and his own journey, but makes a bold appearance in-between verses. It leads a wide open sound that fulfills an empty, voided space and screams "let it go". "I'd Be Dead" is a simply beautiful ode to healing, full of honest reflection and confessions.

We are so excited about all of the motion picture possibilities with this song. We can see it in a wide range of projects from Grey's Anatomy to indie films, or even a sensitive and tender commercial. We believe that this track embodies an idea central to many large projects, and are certain that it will catch on and gain the attention that it deserves.

Give it a listen below, and check your music source for the expected album release on February 5. You can also follow along on the Photo Ops website, and social media.
