This week’s sync song of the week comes from eclectic LA/Sweden hybrid, Grizfolk. They’ve been on our radar for a while and when reviewing potential tracks for the week came across them on a playlist and wondered why more people haven’t been talking about them!
Press-wise, not tons has been going on for these lads. Although they did apparently play one of LA’s rad “School Night” gigs last year, which prompted popular radio station KCRW’s Chris Douridas to write an article claiming the “standing room only” gig was “a mesmerizing experience live.”
Based on their name alone you’d perhaps expect something folksy, but what you get is so much more! The band has a brilliant EP packed with catchy almost-pop songs—we say “almost” because the catchiness of their tunes isn’t overproduced or canned sounding. It is instead kind of raw and organic sounding vocally, with exceptionally clean production. There’s a natural effortlessness and ease to their tunes, which allows their music to fit well with commercial projects like adverts, television or film.
In particular we love the track “Vagabonds” off of their From The Spark EP. Lyrically the piece is universally relatable, which augments the commercial viability of the tune. Musically there’s a solid hook and a singable chorus, there’s also a nice power behind the track’s overall youthful sound. It strikes us as a summer sunset song (A song you’d imagine accompanying an August sunset in Southern California), and for that reason we think it’d work well in young-adult TV dramas like Gossip Girl, Teen Wolf, or Pretty Little Liars, as well as films of the same vein.
Yesterday, Grizfolk announced they would be joining Bastille on tour this Fall. You can head to their website for tickets, news, and more, as well as SoundCloud to hear the rest of their EP — Check out “Vagabonds" below and let us know what you think!
