Variety: Jeff Russo Scores "Fargo"

Posted by

If you’re a fan of the Coen Brothers’ cult classic 1996 film, “Fargo,” or of Billy Bob Thornton you’ve probably been glued to FX over the past couple weeks for the miniseries remake of the “trademark Hitchcock territory.”Fargo

Although, plot-aside, Variety reports that composer Jeff Russo’s score is “of particular note” for its “spare yet strikingly detailed” aural accompaniment. Russo, who has previously worked with the show’s creator Noah Hawley, told Variety “Noah had said to me ‘I’m really looking for it to sound cold and lonesome and stark—all the things that you would expect from the landscape,” adding that even so, “there’s an emotional aspect to it and a melancholy to it.”

Variety claims the score pays homage to Hitchcock’s legendary composer, Bernard Herrmann, referencing a particular piece from the series with “an astringent layer of strings play[ing] very low in the soundtrack, building tension almost subconsciously,” suggesting that “It’s as if Bernard Herrmann was resurrected for TV’s current golden age.”
